RCM has been adopted as a Preventive Maintenance (PM) improvement approach that focuses on identifying appropriate PM tasks that will manage the risks of equipment failure most effectively. Other than its unique characteristics as a cost-effective maintenance strategy, RCM tools also identify dominant causes of equipment failure and schedule of PM tasks to improve on assets’ reliability and availability.
Despite the least cost maintenance and value add PM tasks, some managers are hesitant to integrate RCM into their maintenance program, as it doesn’t deliver the promised expectations. Unknown to many, some RCM programs fail in their implementation as managers have no or little concrete strategic approach that will eventually lead to undesirable consequences.
