China faces a double energy challenge - ensuring a long-term, secure supply of fuel and electricity to keep its giant economy operating at a high growth level and minimising the negative environmental impact of that growth by keeping a lid on greenhouse gas emissions.

The sustainable solution is lowering the country's dependence on fossil fuels, accelerating the addition of renewable, low-carbon alternatives to the energy mix, and generally becoming more energy-efficient, particularly in fast-expanding urban areas. As negotiations continue post-Copenhagen on a global strategy to tackle climate change, it is clear that progress towards this cleaner energy future - in China and elsewhere - will depend not just on the actions of governments but also on private sector support, particularly on the investment side.
