International Symposium on Remote Sensing of Environment (ISRSE) 2013

From April 10 to 15, 2011, the 34th International Symposium on Remote Sensing of Environment (ISRSE) was held in Sydney, Australia. At the closing ceremony, the International Committee on Remote Sensing of Environment (ICORSE) declared that the 35th ISRSE will be hosted by CEODE in Beijing from April 22 to 26, 2013. This is the first time for the ISRSE to be hosted by China in the 50-year history of the internationally renowned series of symposiums.

ISRSE is called “The cradle of remote sensing”; the concept of remote sensing was proposed at the 1st ISRSE in the U.S. in 1962. A visible, credible force in the field, the ISRSE’s mission has been to facilitate international remote sensing of environment. The symposia are always supported by NASA, ESA and related international organizations. The symposium will provide a platform for countries with established and emerging Earth observation programs to report on their progress, as well as new initiatives in the remote sensing arena. The ISRSE is also one of the key research and communication platforms of the remote sensing aspect of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS). The symposia are convened every two years, attracting more than 1000 remote sensing scholars and experts from 60 countries in previous symposia.

30 Chinese remote sensing scholars attended the 2011 symposium. Prof. Guo Huadong, Director-General of CEODE, spoke on “The Earth Observation Progress in China” and “ABCC Program”. At the closing ceremony, Guo Huadong made a proposal to host the 35th ISRSE in 2013. All delegates voted to approve the proposal. The symposium will build up a high-level and multi-layer academic exchange platform and remote sensing of environment technology will be developed. It will promote international cooperation and applications in the field of remote sensing of environment.
