The Philippines is expected to double its coal-fired capacity within the next 5 years, making it one of the fastest-growing coal markets in South East Asia. On a mission to fuel its growing economy and reduce power shortages, the Philippines has 45 new coal-fired power plants either in planning or under construction. Although the majority of its coal is imported from Indonesia, questions over Indonesian export regulations and possible future changes in FTAs mean that buyers in the Philippines and the rest of South East Asia are looking for alternative sources to diversify their supply.
