Assistants in Nursing (AIN) provide a key role in unlocking skills in hospitals and enabling a more efficient delivery of healthcare. The recent Grattan health report estimated that public hospitals could save nearly $430 million a year and fund treatment for more than 85,000 extra people if AINs played a bigger role. Reflecting the changing demands in healthcare services, AINs are already a well-established role in aged and private care and the 2014 Assistants in Nursing conference will explore the potential to effectively utilise and support this workforce across all models of care. A core focus for the 2014 program is around strategic nursing workforce planning and development of a suitable model of care for the AIN role, looking at a variety of implementation approaches from pilot sites and services who have established the role; addressing challenges around appropriate training, mentorship, scope of practice and role evaluation.
