Open Innovation (OI) has become a rapidly growing trend over the past few years, not just in the U.S., but around the world. Part of this is due to the fact that OI allows businesses to share technologies, ideas and other resources in an effort to take products to the market faster and improve services quicker. This practice has become very attractive given our present low-economic-growth environment.
Open Innovation has taken leaps and bounds as it continues to evolve with each year that passes. While many companies have incorporated OI into their business model, others are just beginning to explore the practice of collaborating with external groups in an effort to improve products or services using new methods of innovation. The size of a company is one reason why some have led the OI movement and others have just recently jumped on the bandwagon. Still, others remain in the exploration and pilot project phase. Resources and executive support are key reasons for this disparity, but so are trust and culture. Some industries and regions are more apt to sharing ideas, while others are more reluctant.
There are many challenges to OI, challenges that must be met if an OI program is going to succeed. OI champions are charged with building a team and ensuring effective communication both internally and externally. Financing projects and obtaining management buy-in are also on an OI leader’s priority list from a front-end perspective, as is determining how to make the decision whether to GO or NO-GO a project. On the back-end, managers have to measure the success of an initiative and evaluate its overall performance. But of course, it doesn’t end there. The next step is to update revenue goals and build on these successes. This conference will give you the tools to do just that.
