Interconnections within digital computing and switching systems today are often a critical performance bottleneck. The purpose of this Workshop is to determine the interconnection requirements of emerging and future computer and communications systems and to discuss state-of-the-art solutions in wired and wireless, optical and electrical interconnection technologies. Interconnection technologies are considered at the component, packaging, and systems level.

The rapid growth of computer internetworking and the rise of new applications to support content, commerce and communications are driving the requirements for still higher levels of computing and communications. Without dramatic improvements in the performance of the interconnections, the exponential increase in the performance of high-speed electronics and communications technologies will not continue.

Because of the multi-disciplinary nature of the interconnect problem, this Workshop brings together researchers and engineers with expertise in a variety of fields including electronic, optoelectronic, and optical interconnection technologies. It covers the full spectrum of high performance interconnect challenges from chip-scale to systems-scale architectures in networking, communications, and high performance computing platforms. The Workshop is comprised of tutorials and invited talks of the highest caliber as well as a few student-contributed papers. In addition, all attendees participate in smaller working groups to discuss and design a conceptual solution to a predefined design problem. This problem is intended to promote an overall focus to the meeting and promote interactions between the participants, and is a unique feature of the Workshop.
