Regulatory frameworks toward research standards to the concepts of measuring real world impact and funding/investment returns is critical for securing the future prosperity of the country.

Whilst the 2012 ERA Report demonstrated an increase in the overall amount of research undertaken with a 24% increase and a doubling of the number disciplines performing at world standard, the Australian research sector continues to face an uphill battle in the pursuit toward a knowledge based economy. With Prime Minister Rudd declaring the China resources boom over, the role of research in innovation and driving the national economy forward lies significantly in part to the performance and competitiveness of the university led research sector.

From the challenges of refining regulatory frameworks toward research standards to the concepts of measuring real world impact and funding/investment returns, bridging the gap between current research output and productivity whilst securing the long term sustainability of the research workforce, remains a critical priority for securing the future prosperity of the country.

With this in mind, the 3rd Annual Toward Research Excellence Conference aims to shed a spotlight on all these issues and from impact to excellence, analyse the challenges facing the research sector.
