Examining the planning and delivery of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) Aged Care Strategy in Australia.
"The strategic planning and delivery of aged care services in Australia has involved limited attention being paid to the needs of LGBTI people. In general, the approaches that have been adopted assume that all people are heterosexual and gender conforming. Such approaches have reinforced the invisibility of older LGBTI people and as a result have ignored a sizeable group of Australians of diverse sexual orientation, sex or gender identity, which is estimated to be up to 11% of the Australian population." The National Strategy for LGBTI Ageing and Aged Care has thrown into the spotlight on what defines the ageing experience of LGBTI people in our community and the key elements that must drive strategy for LGBTI Aged Care. The context for this strategy is rooted in the invisibility of LGBTI people in aged care strategy and the historical discrimination and stigma that have denied them access to care that is inclusive and sensitive to their needs.
The Inaugural two day forum on LGBTI Aged Care brings LGBTI organisations and research centres, government, aged care service providers, researchers and peak bodies to discuss the drivers for LGBTI Aged Care policy and the strategies for implementing reform. The two day will focus on the factors that will influence effective, focused and inclusive service delivery that empowers LGBTI ageing and aged care.
