Renal denervation is the first catheter based technique to treat severe arterial hypertension. The afferent and efferent renal nerves are interrupted by applying radiofrequency energy to the renal artery wall via an endovascular approach. This technique is a major breakthrough in antihypertensive therapy. The randomized Simplicity-2 Trial has shown, that this procedure is safe and effective.
