One way that ASHS accomplishes its purpose “to promote and encourage national and international interest in scientific research and education in horticulture” is through our awards. Specifically, our awards program recognizes outstanding accomplishments and contributions. We add value to those accomplishments and contributions by members when we validate them through peer review and selection for awards. ASHS has detailed procedures in place and works hard to maintain the integrity of the awards, so that value can be preserved. Although the rigor of our awards limits the number of award recipients, the openness of the nomination and selection process ensures access for each member. As the nomination period for 2012 awards begins, this column will review the ASHS awards and address why and how you can and should participate.
