At the outset of the 21st century, as the number of art fairs held across the world grew, there was a palpable desire among a great number of art fans, collectors, and art professionals that a full-fledged art fair be held in Japan. In the summer of 2005 that desire became a reality, when a large number of galleries covering diverse genres came together at the Tokyo International Forum in the central Marunouchi district to hold ART FAIR TOKYO. By covering a wide variety of genres, from contemporary art, modern art, nihonga and ukiyoe to antiques, ART FAIR TOKYO has forged a unique style specifically suited to the Japanese art market. For this reason, ART FAIR TOKYO has gained a loyal following among serious collectors of high-quality art and has also succeeded in steadily growing its patronage. With the motto that "art is something to buy, not just something to look at," the fair is gradually succeeding in fostering the development of new generations of collectors. Since 2007, the event has been held each year in April.

ART FAIR TOKYO is now known as the most significant art fair in Japan, welcoming more than 100 top international and domestic art galleries and over 40,000 visitors each year.
