But ballast water has transferred invasive species to environments where they don’t belong – causing irreversible damage in many cases.

Now, new regulations for ship ballast water management are being implemented by the US Coast Guard – for some ship owners, within the year – that could cost shipowners billions of dollars for expensive retrofits. New ships will have to be built with compliant ballast water management systems as well.

The challenges are enormous. How can suppliers and retrofitters ensure that systems will meet the requirements for compliance? What ballast water management system is optimum and how do you ensure you retro-fit your ships in a way that achieves compliance most cost-effectively? How will type-approval processes intersect with compliance deadlines?
